Good Work Deserves A Clear Record

FORM 990

Protect The Mission.
Tell The Financial Story.

You raise funds, serve people and answer to a community. Your annual return should connect the mission people believe in with the records behind the work.

Exempt from income tax does not mean exempt from reporting. Form 990 brings finances, programs and governance into a return that others may read.

The initial consultation is free. No purchase required. Return preparation and planning are separately engaged.

The Return Can Be Public.

Program descriptions and numbers should tell the same story.

Choose The Right Filing.

990, 990-EZ, 990-N and 990-PF are not interchangeable.

Keep The History Intact.

A change in treasurer should not create a gap in annual filings.

The Questions Behind The Return

Serve The Cause.
Account For The Work.

01 · Growing The Organization

Know When The Filing Changes.

New grants, more revenue or additional assets can change the reporting analysis. Confirm the organization’s classification and current filing requirements instead of automatically reusing the smallest form.

02 · Explaining The Results

Make The Mission Visible In The Numbers.

Program accomplishments, expense allocations, grants and compensation deserve records that agree. Donors and grantmakers may see the return; clear reporting starts with what actually happened.

03 · Handing Over Responsibility

Give The Next Treasurer A Usable File.

Keep determination letters, prior returns, extensions and acceptance evidence together. Establish who supplies the figures, who reviews the draft and who is authorized to sign. Volunteer turnover does not stop the filing clock.

A Hypothetical Board Transition

“The Last Treasurer Handled It. Are We Current?”

A new volunteer treasurer receives a bank login and last year’s spreadsheet, but no filed return or acceptance record. A balanced bank account does not establish that the annual reporting is current.

Reconstruct the filing history, confirm the tax year and organization type, then connect financial records with program and governance information. The right next step may involve a return, a missing notice or a separate exemption-status issue.

Good Records Make The Next Step Clearer

Bring The Facts. Keep The Story.

Begin with what you have. The initial consultation puts the concern in context; the secure intake connects it with the records.

  • IRS determination letter, organizing documents and bylaws
  • Prior 990-series filings, extensions and acceptance records
  • Financial statements, restricted funds and grant records
  • Program-service descriptions and expense allocation support
  • Officer compensation, board minutes and related-party transactions
  • Fundraising, contribution and any unrelated-business activity records

Do not post tax identifiers or documents publicly. Use the firm’s secure intake for private records.

Direct Answers. Informed Decisions.

Form 990: Questions Worth Asking.

Does Tax-Exempt Mean No Annual Filing?

No. Many exempt organizations must file an annual return or notice, even when they owe no regular income tax. Exceptions exist, so confirm the organization’s specific classification and filing obligation.

How Do We Choose Between Form 990, 990-EZ And 990-N?

The choice depends on the organization’s type, gross receipts, assets and the rules for that year. Certain organizations cannot use the shorter filings. A private foundation generally has a different return, Form 990-PF.

What Happens If We Miss Three Years?

An organization required to file an annual return or notice generally loses its tax-exempt status automatically after failing to file for three consecutive years. Review actual filing evidence and any reinstatement requirements rather than assuming a later filing fixes everything.

Is Form 990 Public?

Generally, the annual return is subject to public inspection, with exceptions for certain information. Prepare it with that visibility in mind. Do not assume every donor detail is public or that every schedule is treated identically.

Does Form 990 Cover Unrelated Business Income Tax?

Not by itself. An exempt organization may separately need Form 990-T for unrelated business income tax. An activity’s connection to the exempt purpose and other rules require review; calling income fundraising does not settle its treatment.

Can A Volunteer Treasurer Start The Consultation?

Yes. Explain the organization, your role, the tax year and the issue. The firm will need appropriate authorization and records before undertaking work. The free initial consultation does not file the return or create an engagement.

Does This Replace A Nonprofit Audit?

No. A tax return engagement is different from an audit or other financial-statement service. State registration, grant and audit requirements may also apply and should be identified separately.

When Is Form 990 Due?

Generally the 15th day of the fifth month after the accounting period ends—May 15 for a calendar-year organization, adjusted for weekends and legal holidays. Confirm the return type, year and any applicable relief.

Is A Form 990-N Appropriate For Every Small Nonprofit?

No. Many eligible organizations with gross receipts normally $50,000 or less can use Form 990-N, but organization-specific exceptions and the meaning of normally matter. Private foundations and certain other organizations follow different rules.

Can We Extend A Form 990-N Like A Form 990?

No. Form 8868 generally provides an extension for Form 990 and certain other exempt-organization returns, but not Form 990-N. Identify the actual filing before assuming an extension applies.

Is Board Review The Same As A Financial Audit?

No. Giving a board the return or documenting its review does not turn tax preparation into an independent audit. Report the organization’s actual review process accurately and separately identify any financial-statement service.

Do Overseas Activities Or Fundraising Events Need More Detail?

They can. Activities such as foreign programs, fundraising events, grants, noncash contributions and related-party transactions may trigger specific schedules and questions. Keep supporting details with the annual records.

Can We Start Without Buying The Guide?

Yes. The free prerecorded initial tax consultation is open without a purchase. Book ownership is optional for return preparation and required for Tax Advisory. A nonprofit return, exemption application, reinstatement, research or audit is not silently bundled with another service.
